Franz Josef Land with RUSARC

Amazing landscapes, icebergs, dolphins, polar bears, walruses and thousands of birds overhead
Duration: 32 days
NARYAN-MAR - NOVAYA ZEMLYA - FRANZ JOSEF LAND - MURMANSK

Itinerary of the expedition

DAY 1
NARYAN-MAR
We check into our cabins, get acquainted with the boat and crew and set off. At the safety briefing, the crew will tell you about the rules of behavior on the boat and the rescue equipment available on board. This day will be spent on the water.
DAYS 2-3
The Pechersk and Barents Sea
We go out on the big water, get acquainted with the sails, “pump up”. We are heading for Malye Karmakuly.
DAY 4
Malye Karmakuly
This is the name of the polar station on the South Island of Novaya Zemlya. It is the oldest operating polar station in Russia. In 2021, it celebrated its 125th anniversary, in honor of which a new residential module was installed there. Now the specialists working here have conditions like on the big earth, there is even a gym and a sauna.
DAYS 5-6
Passage to the “Russian Harbor” bay
DAY 7
Arrival at Russian Harbor.
Novaya Zemlya's largest bay, where we will look at an abandoned polar station.
DAY 8
Inostrantseva Bay
The bay is famous for its picturesque glacier. We start to get acquainted with Arctic fauna: thick-billed kites nest on the coastal rocks, and if you are lucky, you can see polar bears on the shore.
DAY 9
Cape Desire and the Orange Islands
Cape Zhelaniya is located at the northern tip of Novaya Zemlya. The Pomors called the cape “Revenues” - it was the extreme point where fur trappers reached: it was impossible to fish further because of the impassable ice of the Kara Sea. This is not an obstacle for us: we are going further, to Franz Josef Land. On the way we admire the wildlife of the Orange Islands, where we can see walruses, polar bears and even whales.
DAYS 10-11
Passage to Franz Josef Land
DAY 12
Cape Tegethoff, Gaul Island
We begin our acquaintance with Franz Josef Land in the very place where the history of the archipelago's exploration once began. In 1873, the sailing schooner “Admiral Tegethoff”, on which the Austrian expedition was planning to open the North-Eastern Passage, was nailed by ice to this then unknown coast. Thus it was named Franz Josef Land, in honor of the Emperor of Austria. A monument was erected on the cape to commemorate the discovery of the schooner Admiral Tegethoff.
DAY 13
Cape Flora, West Northbrook Island
During the summer months, the cape is ice-free, so it has become a convenient landing site for various expeditions. Its name speaks for itself: this cape, unlike all the others, is rich in vegetation. Different types of mosses and polar poppies can be found here.
DAYS 14-17
Silent Bay, Gookera Island
On Gukera Island we will visit the polar station, where restoration work is currently underway: they plan to open a museum complex on the basis of the station's former hangar. Also, the northernmost post office in the world works here! Opposite the Tikhoi Bay we are waiting for the amazing Rubini Rock. It is a 174-meter basalt rock, which is a solidified in the form of pillars pieces of lava. Since these protrusions are ideal for nesting, the rock has become a bird market. It's not called “Rubini” for nothing, after the opera singer Giovanni Batista Rubini: it can get very loud here. We'll see Thistle-billed Buzzards, Washing Gulls, Luriks, Great Arctic Gulls, Glaucous Gulls and Pipits.
DAY 15
Fiume, Champ Island; polar observatory on Heysa Island
We land on Champ Island. This is a unique place where you can see spherulites - spherical stones: from very small to huge, up to three meters in diameter. Their origin has not been determined until now - it is a real miracle of nature. The neighboring island - Heysa Island - is notable for the geophysical polar observatory, from which meteorological rockets used to be launched. Not far from the observatory there is a walrus rookery, where we will go on a photo hunt!
DAY 16
Cape Geller, Wilczek Land Island
Another historical cape: at the end of the 19th century, a food warehouse was set up here for the next expedition to conquer the North Pole. Two Norwegians - Bentsen and Bjervig - were left to guard the storehouse. During the wintering Bentsen died of illness. Before his death he asked his companion not to bury him until spring, because he was worried that the shallow burial would be dug up by bears and foxes. Bjervig fulfilled this wish and buried Bentsen two months later, when spring came and the expedition leader returned to the island. Bentsen's grave is still preserved on the island today.
DAY 17
Cape Washington, Ziegler's Island
William Ziegler was an American millionaire who paid for an expedition to reach the North Pole. The expedition was unsuccessful, the ship was carried away by ice, and the scientists spent two years here: they explored the central part of the FJL by sledge and mapped several islands, including this one.
DAY 18
Cape Fisher, Salisbury Island.
The island is named after a famous American geologist. Our goal here
is to see the spectacularly beautiful Cape Fisher.
DAY 19
Cape Norway, Jackson Island
Frederick Jackson, who discovered this cape, named it in memory of the famous Norwegian travelers Nansen and Johansen. They tried to reach the North Pole, but were forced to spend 6 winter months on the island. Now a stone base and a single log remain of their dugout. This artifact is the main attraction of the island.
DAY 20
Cape Bama, Charles Alexandra Island.
There is also a polar station on this island, but as it is a border station.
it's a border station, so it's unlikely to be visited. However, here we will be able to admire the population of beluga whales, and if we are lucky, we will also see narwhals - sea unicorns.
DAYS 21-22
Cape Stolbovoy and Cape Fligeli, Rudolf Island
Rudolf Island is not only the northernmost island of the archipelago, but also the northernmost point of the Russian Arctic. It is almost square in shape and all of it, except for the coastal parts, is covered with a thick layer of continental ice, from which some basalt masses protrude. Cape Stolbovaya is particularly remarkable, resembling from afar two dilapidated towers of a medieval castle.
DAYS 23-29
Crossing to Murmansk
DAY 30
Arrival in Murmansk
Traditional farewell dinner on the ship.
